DGV type modular overvoltage arresters protect electrical systems against overvoltage
which may occur in the power supply circuit during a storm (lightning) or during coupling to the network (industrial interferences). Depending on the distribution set-up, it is necessary to provide for one element per phase to be protected and, if necessary, an additional element for neutral.
Protection is provided by a zinc oxide varistor (MOV) and a heavy duty gas discharge tube associated and which is able to channel currents of up to 40 kA to earth with a very low residual voltage and without incurring damage. According to the latest issue of NFC 15-100 standard from 2002, it is compulsory to install those overvoltage arresters on the incoming power supply if the building is fitted with lightning conductors. Stepped protection can be achieved using DGV type arresters combined with DGT or DGX type arresters positioned downcircuit.
