DGT type modular overvoltage arresters protect electrical systems against overvoltage which may occur in the power supply circuit during a storm (lightning) or during coupling to the network (industrial interference). Depending on the distribution set-up, it is necessary to provide for one element per phase to be protected and, if necessary, an additional element for neutral.
Protection is provided by a zinc oxide varistor which is able to channel currents of up to 40 kA to earth without incurring damage. Stepped protection of the installation can be achieved using a DGT type arrester combined with a high-energy DGA arrester positioned upcircuit, or a lower intensity DGX type arrester positioned downcircuit.
The DGT overvoltage arrester benefits from a new design of removable cartridge allowing the varistor to be replaced without affecting the overvoltage arrester’s wiring.
